I have an index and 360ppr.
What do you recommend to use rigid tapping?
Sorry my knowledge about electronics is limited.

Can you re-state the current question? I have rather lost the thread here, even after reading back from the beginning.

I'm using the starter encoder that was installed on my lathe
This is a encoder with an index and 150ppr.
This should be enough for threading.
But I want to do rigid tapping.
So I will need a quadrature encoder.
The current encoder is connected with a toothed belt to the spindle.

This should work I guess?
A and B channel
And Z for Index
5-24V

That's an open collector interface encoder
It should be OK but if you have differential inputs, a E6B2-CWZ1X would be better
Also 2000 PPR is too high resolution for parallel port reading at more than a few hundred RPM

What's a good PPR?
This one is 1024PPR. The E6B2-CWZ1X isn't open?

The maximum resolution (PPR) you can use depends on your hardware
What hardware are you using?

OK so you can pretty much use any resolution encoder
Encoders with differential (line driver) outputs like the E6B2-CWZ1X
will have better noise immunity than TTL or open collector types
