Here we go... was created by megaplow
My PM940 mill showed up about two weeks ago. Getting it up and running with Mach3 has been painful to say the least. The more I look around the more I see 7I76e and LinuxCNC...
I just ordered a 7I76e and will be starting my conversion next week.
Do any of you have a PM940 running this setup?
I am excited to meet everyone and share my findings.
Happy milling,
Joe

Well, we can't guarantee that setting up LinuxCNC will be any easier than Mach3, but the end result should be rather better.

Greetings,
Rather curious, what is a PM940?
Would you kindly post a link to this machine?
Cheers,
Dave

Its a Precision Matthews 940 cnc. It is the largest bench mill I could fit in my shop. I picked one a CNC version but had to wait four months for it. What led me to this mill is that it is CNC while still maintaining the ability to do full manual control.

I asume that the CNC version comes with stepper motors?
Do you have the motor drives?
In fact, can you describe what comes with the CNC version?

That's the one!
Attached is an image of the goodies. The image is not my machine, mine has the nMotion controller which is getting swapped out for a 7I76e and LinuxCNC.

Greetings,
The wiring looks nice and tidy.
Is the vendor installing the 1716e for you? Or, do you have to install it yourself?
Always nice to have someone supply a working machine.
I was also impressed with the Flame Hardened ways!
Looking forward to your next report.
Any chance you are in the Seattle, WA USA neighborhood?
Cheers,
Dave

Sadly no, the vendor is not installing the 7I76 for me. When the machine arrived, I went about setting up mach3. The motion was off and I couldn't find a machine profile for mach online. The 7I76 kept popping up in my searches and since I was never a mach3 expert, I thought why not give it a go?
Tonight I labeled all the important wires. After that I am going to remove the electronics panel from the back of the mill and put it on the wall. Then I will do the 7I76 install. Till then I will be compiling my rt kernel....

Geesh you'd think they'd supply a config for Mach3 and test it before sending the machine out.
Pretty poor form from the supplier.
Anyways Linuxcnc has a bit of learning curve during the initial setup but as you learn more you see how much easier it is than Mach3 to get thing just the way you like.
