It would be best to set up the spindle-enable output of the 7i76 to turn the spindle properly on and off. Is that an option?

Yes, that should be possible. The more I get a handle on the HAL the easier some of this is becoming. There are some terminals on the board for reset and I think enable that I should be able to connect to. The other thing I want to do is to detect if the motor faults and stop all motion. I have only seen it fault once or twice while running it manually. When it faults, a yellow LED comes on and then you have to go through the reset procedure to get the spindle to turn back on. I should be able to use the signal that turns on the LED to feed back to LinuxCNC.

Thanks
John
