The test rig was never used on my lathe only play on lab bench, biggest problem was that laser cut was eccentric and did not perform well. To make this mechanically correct will work but there will be som tweaking to get all in right place.
I mounted encoder directly on my motor shaft as I have 1:1 belt drive (not optimal) but I have no place to mount encoder on spindle shaft.

The A and B sensors can be anywhere, but they need to be N+1/4 or N-1/4 apart.
Ideally the B transition happens half way between each A transition. It is this phasing that gives the direction as well as position information.
You can check the phasing with Halscope, the built-in oscilloscope in LinuxCNC. Just make your mounting adustable in some way.
tecno: That looks like a 3D printed sensor mount, so why didn't you make it curved so that the sensors all sit at the same radius?
