UBM1 mill with LinuxCNC was created by mane
I´m new on LinuxCNC forum and want to retrofit my UBM1 mill. The mill is already CNC.
Machine has to be programmed directly on the machine, which is not very easy to handle.
The stepper motors sounds a bit loud, keyboard keys sometimes stick, CRT monitor sometimes black, and so on.
Now i will change to LinuxCNC and DC servos with UHU controller boards.
These are my requirements:
- Ethernet connection
- 3 axis with step/dir
- 5 limit switch sensors (machine has these sensors on board)
- some spindle and feed override, run/resume button, ESTOP
- MPG pedant later on
Think i will not need too much IO pins at the beginning.
I saw the 7i76e but it´s about 270€ in Europe, which is too much.
Found the 7i92 could do it, but have some questions.
- Could i use the 7i92 with a simple BOB or do i need a mesa breakout card?
- Could i wire directly onto the 7i92 without BOB?
- IO expansion should be possible, if needed.
Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.

why not use to parallel ports. think one would have the basic i/o covered.
if the servos feedback is only to the drive then should have plenty of io on the parallel port. you can add a second later if you need one. if your servos have feed back then definitely go with a mesa card and an interface card

At the moment i use one parallel port. But for future i want ethernet and no second parallel port.
The 7i92 seems to be a good alternative. But could i use it with a simple bob or wire directly? Or do i need additional mesa card, for example 7i76?

Or just one 7i96, it has a 7i92 and a 7i76 but with less I/O. And it can also be expanded later on.

7i96 would be also an option. I thought it does not work with ether rtai or preempt.
I have Linux CNC 3.4-9-rtai-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 3.4.55-4linuxcnc i686 GNU/Linux
Iḿ not sure if it will work with my system.

"3.4-9-rtai-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT"
is a bit misleading, that's a RTAI kernel, not Preempt-RT
You need Preempt-RT kernel for a 7I96

Do i need Preempt-RT kernel for all ethernet based cards? Found an older post here.
forum.linuxcnc.org/39-pncconf/29692-can-...-7i92?start=10#63328.
In this case i need Preempt-RT anyway.
I will try this instructions to install Preempt-RT, it hopefully will work.

Attached a picture from my machine.

Just install LinuxCNC + Debian Linux using this image:
www.linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/
Note that the warnings there are likely to soon disappear, it has now been extensively tested.

Thanks for this Information. But i will try it to see if it works. If not, i will use the Preempt-Rt iso Image.
Is it right that all mesa ethernet boards require the Preempt-RT kernel?

Yes. I think this is because kernel modules (as used by RTAI drivers) do not have access to the ethernet hardware.
