After using a 5i25/7i76 on my lathe and mill just changing the configs that has worked flawlessly for the past two years .

I had the opportunity to use a 7i92 using 2.8 successfully with the help of the forum.

I now want to try a 7i96 I am aware there has been a lot of changes recently. So for my next machine just 3 axis with 3 mpg's and a spindle encoder.

What is the most suitable Linuxcnc version to use?

The 7I96 is fully supported by LinuxCNC 2.8

So would this be the correct version linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64-r12.iso or linuxcnc-stretch-uspace-amd64-r12.iso.zsync

edit :I see on further reading that the zsync file is basically the same but with a different download method.

After the download is this the correct image from the packet manager . linux-image-4.9.0-8-rt-amd64 4.9.110-3+debu6

That's the right kernel, but v2.7.

For max 7i96 support you probably want 2.8. But that can be got via an upgrade from the buildbot:

buildbot.linuxcnc.org

And you also get the fun new bugs brought in my Multispindle.

Can you tell us what the actual image file should be? Buildbot doesn't show dates, version numbers, etc. There isn't enough data on that page to know which are newer and which are older. Some might know that Precise & Wheezy represent different versions, but of what? and which one is newer? Also, even armed with those answers, it's still completely unclear what version of Linuxcnc is actually included. I have a 7i96 board and am hugely frustrated because I don't know how to check the version I currently have installed, or which one I need to switch to and how.

If you started with the Debian Stretch ISO then you should download the Stretch version of master

Depending on the OS your using you can see instructions for getting 2.8 from buildbot on my web page for Uspace.

gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/uspace/

I have a 7i96 configuration tool here
