should i even try to switch from mach3? was created by janicecabs
i just bought a used CNC machine. its a 5x10 machine with a lathe and a 8 ATC.
i used to run this machine back when i worked at the place where i got the machine from. one of my big concerns with the machine is running on a old pc, running vista. i would like to try over time to get it going with lunuxCNC. i'm sure i can get it to do the basics, but when it comes to setting up the ATC i'm a bit worried. is there a way to use the existing mach3 files to make it easier to make the switch?

There is a conversion script for converting to linuxcnc within stepconf, but I doen't cover things such as an ATC.
We would need more info on the hardware to advise much more.

Normally I would say that there is not much point switching from a working Mach3 setup to a not-yet-working LinuxCNC setup. However in the case if a lathe LinuxCNC is rather better where threading is concerned. Though this is an advantage you will only see if you have a spindle encoder with more than one pulse per rev.
What interface hardware are you using? Again, if it's a Smoothstepper then that won't work with LinuxCNC, so that's another reason not to switch.
