Recommendations for DXF to G-code conversion? was created by SlightlyLoony
A friend and I are building a woodworking CNC machine that we'll control with LinuxCNC. Neither of us are experienced with either CAD or CAM software. We're wondering what free open-source CAD and CAM software LinuxCNC users would recommend to us. What are y'all using? What do you like? What do you hate? :)

Thanks!

I mainly use Fusion 360 (Windows, Mac), but that is a complete CAD and CAM system, not something that imports DXF.

You could look at G-code tools in Inkscape (Mac, Windows, Lnux) , or Sheetcam (Windows, Linux) or possibly Vectric V-carve (Windows only AFAIK)

+1 for Fusion with a warning that it might look a bit overwhelming at first but it knows tricks that are difficult to duplicate in more basic software.

For open source software that runs in Linux there's also Qcad.
Last I looked CamBam had a Linux version. Not open source or free but no time limit on the demo, however there is a limit on the number of times g-code can be posted. Me and CamBam couldn't get along, some people like it a lot.

Inkscape with the included gcodetools can do plenty of cnc stuff, it is very easy to use and outputs files that are ready for Linuxcnc. It can also open 2D dxf files and output gcode, it needs "pstoedit" installed.
BlenderCAM is another option for a full 3D modelling, also outputs gcode for Linuxcnc, but it has a steep learning curve.
Dxf2gcode is a small program that does exactly what it's name implies.
Given the time, i would learn Blender and be done with it. It can do a lot more than 3D !
