A Sad Story and some Help Needed was created by TRAUPMANN00
Last July, I just about had my machine running well. I was in discussion with China about the spindle not working from linuxCnc commands.
Then the unthinkable happened. My oldest son died of a heart attack at the beginning of August. My life has been consumed by grieving, memorials, cremations, closing out his numerous accounts, and setting up his estate. Emotionally a very rough time.

The machine has sat still until two weeks ago, I started up the computer and downloaded the updates. Now nothing works. The errors point to places where no data is found; the whole CNC system seems to be corrupted.

- MESA 6i25 with one 7i76 daughter card. (MESA shows 5i25 in the download)
- Self Built Gantry of my own design 48x48x10
- (4) DQ860MA micro stepper drivers from Wantai
- (4) Mesa 34 Stepper Motors

LINUXCNC - 2.8.0-pre1-4497-gbee2d20

I hate to throw this whole thing in the trash, but I am getting to that point. I am not an implementation engineer and have struggled mightily with this. Can someone lead me to the greener pastures??

I did that a few days (or weeks)ago and when I started my machine I was prompted that it would update the ini and a backup would be created.

There is should be old folder in your machine file.

You could save it and revert possibly

The ini is labeled with joints now and seems more detailed

So sorry for your loss.

If you updated from LinuxCNC 2.7 to LinuxCNC 2.8 as Leon82 mentioned, there should be a backup created of all your
LinuxCNC 2.7 hal configurations.

If you want to go back to 2.7 you would have to reload LinuxCNC 2.7. I suspect it may be easier to just fix whatever is
wrong with your current installation rather than back out of the update.

What error messages do you get and can you post your current hal and ini files here?

No matter the attempts I make, I get this type of message.

When looking for the *.ko file as an example, the file is empty.

What Happened in the last 6 months??

I see I misstated I was updated to 2.8, I was looking at the PREL number only.

Updating to 2.8 (the development, unstable) version should never happen by accident or automatically.

Are you saying that you were running released 2.7.xx and somehow ended up on 2.8 without editing any repository links or anything?

That said, 2.8 is entirely usable, I have been using it for years.

Can you copy and paste the actual output from starting LinuxCNC from the command line? (command is "linuxcnc")

My note says that it was 2.7, but I really don't know now. Six months is a long time to remember release numbers. What I remember was that several times a week it was being updated and that there was a prel-xxxx-xxxx number after it. So if you know what that release was, that was what I was getting.
Right now I have a LinuxCNC connecting to empty folders (the errors in the attached file). What I need is the direction in getting something working like it did last July. I have all the old files but in several flavors that I'd made to get the pendant (worked fine) and the spindle (never did) to work, all crash in a similar manner.

That sounds like a development (2.8) version, probably coming from the buildbot.

One major change since your machine last worked is a change in the name of all the spindle control pins (part of a move to support multiple spindles)
However, when you open a config you should be presented with a dialog that offers to automatically update the config.

Can you copy and paste or attach a file containing the error log?
