Morbidelli Author 502 - retrofit was created by marvelcabs
I'm considering retrofitting an old Morbidelli Author 502 we have sitting in the workshop. The computer controller died a couple of years ago and I started reading up about retrofits back then and was put off when I saw on a forum that it can be quite complicated to get the machine working with the multitool head and horizontal boring etc.

I was originally looking at Mach 3 for the OS also, however have since discovered LinuxCNC and the compatiblity with the MESA cards. I have no idea which setup would be best for this machine. I do know there are 7 parallel cards attached to the controller.

I've attached some pics of the servos and the drives.

Mach3 can not control such machines without way to many other electronics and added PLC, and even then Mach3 will never know what is going on with the machine and at what ............... never mind to long.
Linuxcnc can do that easily with Mesa cards, and it looks like you can use existing drives and motors.
Have a look at Mesa 5i25 or 6i25 ( same thing but one is for PCI slot, the other for PCI-E ) and a 7i77, maybe adding another 7i84 for more I/O.

Yeh I kind of got that idea when initially looking at a Mach3 solution. So is the PCI-E card going to be easier to setup than an Ethernet based card?

Other forum posts have suggested the wiring of the analog servos to the daughter cards can be quite tricky.

Another aspect I'm concerned about is the controlling of horizontal boring. There is almost a separate machine head that drops down to do horizontal boring. Is this just another Axis of the machine controlled by one of those 7 parallel interfaces?

I also have Mortibelli 502 wanting to retrofit. Did you get any further setting up With your machine and those messa cards? I was thinking Mach3 and I think there is a Mach4 but not familiar

My advice: do not go there, Mach anything is not for industrial machines, it is for hobby stuff and even that not very good at.

Maybe fusion360? I bought the machine to retrofit as a plasma cutting machine but started to think Maybe just keep it as a milling machine? Maybe just change the milling cutters for Aluminum and now days plexiglass due to the COVID-19. I’m going to look into it deeper this fall for winter project.

Fusion360 is a CAD/CAM software, LinuxCNC is a machine controller and so is mach3.
And i would never use such a mill for plasma, i would build or buy or whatever, but leave the mill as a mill.

Betim, there is nothing here for Mach3, there is for LinuxCNC and should also work without issues, if it does not have something non standard.
