There is a LinuxCNC discord here  discord.gg/X3zKzhc

I believe it's best if the LinuxCNC IRC remains as a hardcore dev channel, for what it's worth. But everyone is welcome

[strike]I would have agreed with you 5 years ago, but now it's 2019 and the old guard might consider bringing in young blood and upgrading the communications platform for the project. I don't personally know a single software developer under the age of 34 who uses IRC. Everything is Discord and Slack now, and for good reason. It's much more productive and accessible.[/strike]

Edit: I believe it's best if the LinuxCNC IRC remains as a hardcore dev channel, for what it's worth.

In theory this might be an advantage, except that it wouldn't be a replacement, it would end up being yet another schismatic medium (probably)

xkcd.com/927/ comes to mind.

If we were starting from scratch, then IRC would be an odd choice. But the point is that we are where we are.

Personally I hate forums like this. :-/ It's a real chore to read all the messages every day, whereas with Ye Olde Usenet you could just keep pressing spacebar while the messages scrolled past, and be sure you had read everything. Mailing lists give you the same thing.
One problem with a forum is that folk can ask a question, get an answer and feel that it worked really well for them, but they never see the bigger picture.

Gitter works well as a "persistent" IRC analogue.
