LCNC-2.8 vs LCNC-2.9 was created by spma
Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is a silly question but what are the main differences between the 2.8 and 2.9-pre versions that
are currently under development?
I don't understand why there are two releases under development at the same time, plus why does the latter already have
a pre-release and 2.8 still does not?
Also, I've seen a ton of work done on the 2.7 branch after the v2.7.14 release, isn't it stable enough for a new minor release, v2.7.15 maybe?
Thanks in advance!

Version 2.8 has been quarantined off for final changes with no feature set changes pending it being packaged to becoming the distribution version which will retire 2.7.
In the meantime, V2.9, the development version is still open for business for new features.
Yes its a bit messy with 3 versions but it will fix itself eventually.

Thanks for the explanation rodw! Is there any place where I can find the list of features and changes that happened in each version?
I mean, the docs/NEWS file is 10 years old, even on the master branch...(and so are a lot of files there, which I believe makes them completely outdated, except the files that explain features) I guess some cleanup would be nice on those folders...is anyone already assigned to that matter? Because I wouldn't mind doing some cleanup, I think it would be a good way to start contributing to the project
Best regards,
Simão

The 2.7 to 2.8 changes are documented here:
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/getting-start...dating-linuxcnc.html
The 2.8 to 2.9 changes are very much _not_ documented here:
linuxcnc.org/docs/html/getting-started/updating-linuxcnc.html
Though one would expect them to be.

No you wouldn't. Deleting the version from the URL gives the current release docs.
To get the master docs you put /devel/ in the version slot:
linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/getting-sta...dating-linuxcnc.html
(Though at the time of writing that is a clone of the 2.8 version)

Thanks for the link, I've never noticed that the "updating linuxcnc" pages were actually the changelogs of the released versions.
The name is quite misleading as I thought they were instructions about upgrading the linuxcnc version
