There was a topic here last year about wheezy and stretch and those usb dongles, someone has writen a short post about how to.
They need proprietary drivers that are not included with debian.

Too late to the party, but have had good luck with the ones sold for use with the Raspberry Pi, as those are almost by definition Debian compatible.

That would have been nice info to have....lol
The drivers that came with the adaptor was fubar.
I had to hunt and compile a quite a few before it worked. And now I don't know which one worked......but it has been working great....

Ciould you give a brand and model number. I have an RTL88 TP Link USB WiFi working at about 40 Kbps, with thr special driver for it. My laqptop in the same spot has abiout 70 Mbps. I would like to buy a known working USB WiFi with whatever driver is needed.

Wifi has always been problematic for Linux. Google enough and you should find a driver for your hardware to compile. The newer the Linux version, the more likelihood it will work out of the box. I would try Debian Trixie but we don't have an ISO for it. But it should include v 2.9.4 when released in its repos

Someone here told me to get a now I cannot remember which chipset, but SMC Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter matched it on Amazon. I just plugged it in and now, instead of 24 Kbps, I have 15 Mbps. (My shop is several feet below the router. A refrigerator is also in the path.)
