Hi Aaron,
It is not fair to say that no one using parallel ports now because I am still using (but no one cares).
Second thing is why don't you buy a another $5 cheap Chinese breakout board and fixing the problem(if bob is guilty; hang him by order of his excellency the mod tommylight).
Why are you trying to but expensive mesa boards ($89> $5) without knowing (technical) any data.
Please try to find information about data .
Ask help from others ask ask ask.
What kind of machine you are using.
What are the motors and drivers using
Other components you are using.
Then people help you to findout which one best siuted for you.
Don't buy mesa boards until knowing at least basic things of mesa how to.
If your brain is a tank don't buy it until tank overflows
Otherwise you can have magic smoke from Electronics (sometimes no smoke only magic)
Be simple and it may be effective.
Very simple things are complicated and very complicated things are simple when they divide into segments.

I have to agree. That while Mesa's hardware is very nice, a parallel port or 2 are perfectly adiquit for most stepper driven machines. (I run machines with each.)

Who complained about parallel ports ?
I still use them, successfully and reliably. And i do own plenty of Mesa boards.
