Hi all,
I mentioned it in another thread: I just finished my first CNC build (Sorotec AL-Line).
My background is purely electrical/computers and I started with the CNC to get into mechanical stuff. That said, I had no problems with the Linux and the installing part and tuning the latency.
I am now running my CNC with a pure Linuxcnc 2.7.14 via Parport without any modifications/addons.
My problem is that I don't even know which addons/modifications could be interesting for me
Wandering around in the forum I found the probekins (wich seems dead) and the probe screen addons, which look like I want them
My question to all the CNC experts here is:
Which addons/modifications should a total CNC newby consider when working with LinuxCNC?
As you may imagine, I would like to have everything that serves to show off and impress friends
Seriously: for example I am not shure if mounting a USB camera would be usefull for homing on the workpiece although it definitely looks cool. What if I add a dust shoe, which I will definitely do. I would probably prefer the probe (which I would have to build/buy) with probe screen.
Another point is: Instead of probekins should I use gcode ripper? I like the Idea of having everything in LinuxCNC
Maybe this thread can be a collection of stuff for total newbies to try out and then devide which way to go.
Cheers!

Probekins was an experiment aimed at compensating for out-of-flat when engraving PCBs. (though might also have been useful for engraving non-flat components).
It turns out that doing the compensation in the kinematics has some problems. The same idea, though, could potentially be used with the (new) "external offsets" feature and would probably work better.

Hi Andy,
that is exactly what I want to do. Make some PCBs...
I do not yet have the knowledge to create a HAL component to work with the offsets.
Maybe in the future.
Thanks!
