I am seeing if I can work out what the problem in linuxCNC. I have been burrowing through control.c, motion.c and am now in tp.c, which seems to be the module that does the checking.
This is quite amusing! You know - one day I might actually make something with my mill - apart from the bits needed for CNCing it!

ok I was crazy, I just ran across this and it confuses me, I am glad I am not the only one that found out that you can't have the spindle active at S0
This is going to make orienting my spindle "interesting" for tool changes
