Hi...new here..just bought some new closed loop stepper motors and find that mach 3 does not work..can they work on linuxcnc?
I have never looked at it..seems very interesting..I would love to learn if in fact it is better than mach 3..

Thanks

Not sure what else you need from me to answer whether linuxcnc emc2 is capable of running a closed loop stepper motor to make real time adjustment for lost steps.
we have a simple bob with ess smooth stepper to mach3.
What are the variables that have a bearing on the answer?

Thanks for your reply

Normally the encoder on a closed loop stepper is connected to the stepper drive so the step generator (ESS or Linuxcnc) does not even know it exists. But in answer to your question, Linuxcnc supports encoder inputs to close the feedback loop. You probably would need to buy a Mesa Card (say a 7i76e with 5 stepgens) and a 7i85 encoder card (4 encoder inputs) attached to it.

Hi..thanks for reply...I have hss86 hybrid servo driver..literature said real time adjustment don't know if that matters..if I get cards..should I anticipate any other problems from doing this instead of servo?

But that stepper driver can close the loop so why isn't it working in Mach? It should.

So what I read was that mach3 could only make the correction at the end of the run..(maybe that is wrong).for our application I was looking for real time adjustment..I also thought I read that linuxcnc could...maybe wrong..that is why I ask..I really know very little..thats why Im glad to find someone who does...Thanks

Yes, those will work with LinuxCNC, even with a parallel port as they take normal step/dir commands.
Although the speed will be limited with a parallel port, but it is easy to test and use to a certain extent.
LinuxCNC has real time control, mach3 on widnows does not .
As Rod mentioned, they should work with mach, and with a bit of tweaking might get good results, but i do not like or use neither windows nor mach.

thanks for reply...so the real time is important...so when you say the mach 3 could work you do not mean real time right?...if so I have no other choice but linuxcnc...will have to learn.
So would I need any other hardware in terms of boards etc?
