Any speed difference between 7I97 and 7i77

Hi guys,

I am planning to retrofit a vmc with analog drives, and I was looking at what mesa would be suitable for my project.
I would like the ethernet one, because I could use a minipc on which I don't have a PCI or PCIe port
I was wondering if there is any difference in terms of speed of the machine. I know it has to count encoders and generate pwm for the analog control of the motors.
I know ethernet is a bit lower than PCI based versions, and also that I need a PREEMPT-RT kernel in order to work, but I don't know what other disadvantages has ethernet vs PCI
I am using a 7i76e on my mill which has step dir drivers, and happy so far.

Thanks!

I always use the Mesa 5i25 or 6i25 or 7i92 with the Mesa 7i77 for analogue control, there is no difference between them in use at all, they work perfectly, always. I have done several retrofits using them, never had a single issue, just check the forum.

Speed is not terribly important with analog velocity mode servos.
That is, the default 1 KHz servo thread rate is fine for most applications.

Torque mode drives typically require faster servo thread rates. For torque
mode hardware, a PCI/PCIE interface may be a better choice as its easier
to run a 2 or 4 KHZ servo thread on PCI/PCIE than Ethernet.

So the 1 KHZ servo thread rate applies for 7i92 + 7i77 combination?

Yes, 1KHz is usually safe with typical host hardware

2-4 KHz is possible with Mesa Ethernet devices but its very picky about
host PC hardware at that point.

I guess i was lucky as i did test a 7i92M at 4KHz and it worked. Now if i could recall what PC i used for that..... :)
