M73 vs G43, and M70/M72 for tool changes and setting

In the manual_change.ngc example file, there's a comment:
(we change feed, metric/in and potentially G90)
(so save current modal state)
(M73 is not useful here because it reverts G43 on return too)

Can I write a tool change subroutine that uses M70 & M72, and then issues G43? Would I have to issue T-, or M61 Q-?

I'm going to experiment a bit, but I wanted to see if anyone knew of any gotchas. I'm also not sure how the toolsetter probing will work.
