Good morning,
I'm back here to ask you for advice.
We need to retrofit a machine where the drivers and motors are yet on board. Is it a gantry solution with DELTA ASD-A3 drivers+
X(400W) Y1(1KW) Y2(1KW) Z(1,5KW+brake) + A ( 3 KW) + VFD spindle.
Which hardware and which way to manage all the motors do you suggest to me?

Do you think that EtherCAT communication would be a possible solution for linuxcnc?
If yes, which hardware you can suggest to us?

I have experience with a MESA 7i76e board but I think that the basic communication with STEP+DIR doesn't consent us to take all the advantages of this fancy drivers solution.

Thanks in advance
Kind regards

Yes, EtherCAT works with LinuxCNC.

See this post for installation instructions.

Thanks Arvidb,

for the reply.
I was wrong about the Ethercat. Drivers can't accept Ethercat but they can accept these following communication ways in which there is the CANopen:

Type
PT Mode PulseTrain
PR Mode
RS-485
CANopen
Fullclosed Loop Control
Analog Voltage Control
E-CAM
STO

Which one would you suggest to us with linuxcnc that will manage 5-9 axis?
From the link that you attached, I saw the following image.
I'm not expert at all, so my question is:
If linuxcnc can talk via Ethercat through a Beckhoff component and it can talk via CANopen to motors driver, how many axes can manage?

It will be possible to develop a reliable system in this way?
Thank you in advance
Kindly regards

General Mechatronics might have a CAN bus system:

But there are lots of ways to interface with pulse train (ie step/dir) or analogue voltage control.

Thanks andypugh,
I will write to that company to understand better their CANopen solution. I read on their website that their solution works till 6 axes. Maybe do you know also other companies that sell compatible CANopen-linuxcnc hardware?

Thanks in advance
