Mesa analog servo mill advice was created by Pete
Hi,
Brand new LinuxCNC user here!
I am building a analog servo mill and have purchased a Mesa 7I33 quad analog interface board. I am thinking of buying a 7I80 and 7I37 to complete the hardware and running everything from a Pi 4. I will be installing a tool changer in phase 2 of the build.
Just wanting advice on this setup to make sure I am going down the right path - compatibility, latency etc. The Pi would save me from buying a dedicated PC to drive the mill but if a PC is a better option - no problem. What versions of Linux and LinuxCNC would be most appropriate for the 7I80 card?
Thanks in advance,
Peter

I would choose a 7I92H + 7I77 as its the more common interface these days

Used the same combo on several retrofits.

Thanks for the replies,
So it looks like I will have a 7I33TA for sale! The 7I92H has two 26 pin headers but the 7I77 has a DB25 connector - I take it I will need a adapter cable to link the two? Regarding Pi 4 vs a PC to drive the system, either will be fine?

The connecting cable is a flat cable with a 26 header on one end and a
DB25 male on the other, you can get this from Mesa as DB25M-IDC26 CABLE,
or make your own by crimping the ends on a 26 conductor flat cable.
I would not suggest a RPI4 is its difficult to run a 1 KHz servo thread reliably
with the RPI4s Ethernet, and 1 KHz is a reasonable minimum for analog servos.
A small PC would be a better choice.
