Raspberry Pi 4 and MESA cards was created by stefan63
There are many options on MESA cards and Raspberry Pi but witch one to chose?
7C81 RPI FPGA board 90usd
7C80 RPI interfaced Step&dir plus I/O interface 250usd
7I96 STEP/IO Step & dir plus I/O daughtercard 120usd
7I76E STEP/IO Step & dir plus I/O daughtercard - sourcing output version 200usd (I have this card and got it to run on a RPI 4 4GB

Any other more cost effective solutions on RPI / other single card computers?

/Stefan

It’s going to come down to how much I/O you need in addition to your number of axis.
I’d stick with an Ethernet interface, so you aren’t tied into the RPi platform. Well that’s just my opinion.
The 7i96 looks like an affordable entry level platform, from the quick blurb.
At the end of the day the most “cost effective” solution is the one that meets your needs with a little “wiggle room” in respect to I/O.
On anything but a simple router the controller is such a small cost compared to tooling and such.

The most cost efficient option would be for the RPI would be to use its built in gpio headers
Second would be about 30$ and thats REMORA github.com/scottalford75/Remora

It allows you to use a 3d printer board based on the lpc716 chips such as the skr 1.4

But the mesa card will have more support and a more IO.

REMORA looks like a great option for small 3 axis machine!
I have to look in to that!
