Maho 700 C Horizontal spindle tool clamping problem was created by chris mcm
I am in New Zealand . I have a 1987 Maho 700 C imported from Switzerland. The 40 year old machine has had very little use and has likely sat in storage much of it's life. I was advised not to buy it by my electrician but my alternative option was to buy a new Asian made machine. I liked the Maho for its features. eg Hydraulic tool changing, Auto lubrication, Electric speed changing and the solid design.
For several years it ran intermittently as a manual machine but would stop half way through a job. It was destined to the scrap.
Thanks to members of this forum and a knowledgeable Technician I now have a working machine minus the vintage automation.
Today, I found a new problem. I need to cut some gears and I went to use the horizontal spindle for the first time.
The tool clamping is not working. I followed the checking procedure given in the" Maho" manual. There is a critical measurement given on the spindle drawing. 91.4 mm when the clamping is released. Exactly the same as the vertical spindle clamp.
The tool does not draw in properly. Screw the clamp back and the tool wont fit in.
As I understand the draw bar tension is from the Belville washers. The hydraulics compress the same to release the tool. It seems the Belville washers are not drawing the draw bar back sufficiently. An Engineer and my self had this spindle out to clean and grease it. I don't recall interfering with the draw bar mechanism. I don't really want to pull it apart again.
Yes, there is oil in the system and I bled the lines.
I will cut my two gears using the vertical spindle but I need to fix the faulty tool clamping.
Please has any one dealt with this issue before?
Thanks again to all on this forum that helped me last year,
Cheers Chris McMullen Auckland NZ

Hello db 1981
Thanks for the reference. I have already had the spindle out and greased the same. I had a helper who mostly did the work and I don't recall whether he interfered with the tool clamping mechanism. I am wondering whether the problem could be Broken Belleville washers. See www.cnczone.com/forums/fadal/96257-belle...her-replacement.html Has anyone heard of this happening on a Maho?
Further, you can purchase a gauge that measure the tension of the tool clamping. Without such a device it seems you could have a draw bar with insufficient tension and the tool could fret / chatter. I can't find any reference about this on the Maho Forum. I have the Maho Technical documentation in English. They tell you how to dismantle the spindle and how to position the draw bar collet holder. I have a spindle drawing with numbered parts from this forum but no list of the parts. I have no idea how many Belleville washers are required. Thanks again for your help.
Cheers Chris

This is certainly a risk. It is possible that you might be able to rent the tool by the day.
But also be aware that the measurement will be with an assumed nominal tool, presumably with the correct pull stud. Variation in the holders themselves can have as much, or more, effect than the drawbar adjustment. I have one tool that does not pull up tight in mu (home-made) drawbar, and some others that seem to engage possibly _too_ early, ie there is no visible motion upwards as the collet retracts.

Hello Andy
Sorry, I had not checked this Forum for a while. Your photos are a great help.
I will try and locate and hire the device for checking drawbar tension on both the spindles. Do you happen to know the size and where I can procure the Belleville washers. I can see I am possibly going to have to dismantle and reassemble the spindle twice or have the machine out of action while I source the washers. Further, are the washers a standard or a Maho special non standard part.
Thank for your answer. Kind regards Chris McMullen NZ

Hello Chris,
the washers can you purchase at "ott Jakob" www.ott-jakob.de/en/contact/ .
They build your drawbar... Unfortunaly they have no office in Australia / New Zealand.
tension has to be ~12kn.

The springs are probably ISO standard disc springs.
If you are lucky you need one of these three sizes: industrialtooling.co.nz/collections/disc-springs
I got mine from www.springmasters.com/disc-springs/
For about 1/20 the price from the place in NZ above. I would suggest shopping around, but the data at Springmasters is probably helpful to work out what you need.
