Axis can not open files or directories

Hi
I am running Axis 2.9.0-pre0-3879, bla bla.  I am unable to open any files or directories in my home folder.  I have search for solutions on the forum but can not find a anything. This has happened before, but has resolved itself by turning it on and off. This time that does not work.

I have tried to attach screenshots to show my problem. 
I can click the drop down menu to navigate to directories as shown in linuxcnc problem opening file2.jpg.  But when I try to open a directory as in linuxcnc problem opening file.jpg nothing happens.
The only way I can open a file is by opening up a different LCNC machine, open the required file, closing down the second machine, re-open the first machine and choose the file from the recently used drop down.

Have you set same paramters in *.ini?

I don't see any where that this could be relevant
Here is my .ini filter section:

[FILTER]
PROGRAM_EXTENSION = .png,.gif,.jpg Greyscale Depth Image
PROGRAM_EXTENSION = .py Python Script
png = image-to-gcode
gif = image-to-gcode
jpg = image-to-gcode
py = python

I can click on 'readme.ngc' and the file (whatever it is) opens in Axis.
When I click on the green up arrow I can go to different directories, but if I click on a directory folder it gets high-lighted but it does not open.

highlight directory and open does not appear to work like that, it looks like you need to highlight directory and hit enter, or doubleclick on the directory to expand it. I dont know if its a linuxcnc thing or if its the tk file thing

That's got me out of a pickle.  So strange that it suddenly changed behaviour though.
