linuxcnc axis with lathe... how to set Workoffset? no text input? was created by hitchhiker
good morning,hi,happy new year
i work over years with mach3 on my lathe... spend much money and time in to mach3...
now i got a small dell optiplex 3020 with 2 parallelcards (Oxford chipset),i5 4th gen,8gb ram..
i installed linuxcnc with rtai kernel.
setup my lathe...
works...
but..... on mach3 i done my work this way:
put in stock material.
do a cut in z 20mm ... stop spindle, let the x and z where it is..measuring the diameter.. we say diameter is 20mm... the i click the X DRO and enter 10 (radius mode)
and hit enter... now on x dro i have 10mm. then i make a cut in front of the stock material.. let all stay, stop spindle and set the Z DRO to 0.
this is my way on mach3 over years...
but i will change to linuxcnc..
where can i out in this values?!
i have no homing or end or limit switches
thanks!?

If you're using Axis you can use the touch off button.
Select the axis you want to zero, click on "touch off" button. This is the method I use on my mill. Same concept for the lathe.
This link will explain things a little better:
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/gui/axis.html#_manual_control

hi
thanks for your answer.
i dont want to zero! i want to set a value.
if i put in the lathe chuck my stock material, i done 2 cuts.
one cut to set Z to 0
one cut to set X to the measured value.
is my stock diameter 20mm after the first cut i want to set X to 20mm in diameter mode relative to the position where X now is because :
i do the cut and let X stay, stop spindle, measure the stock diameter.
and the measured value must the X value.
could u understand? on a lathe is X the diameter and Z the length.
sorry for bad english...
with the touch function it works... but i wish i have 2 textboxes....
fill in value hit enter...
i know its linuxcnc and not mach3...

I suppose you could use the Linuxcnc Virtual Control Panel extensions, you'd probably have to spend a bit of reading the documentation, searching the forums (there is bound to be someone who implemented what you want). Then time testing.......or our resident guru Andy may have done something along these lines.

Pretty sure you can enter values for touch off, give it a try.
When pressing touch off the value is 0, enter what value you need, should work.

I think he wants to skip pressing the touch off button and just have a text box for each axis.

but as said, you can enter a value when touching off. I don't think its any difference to a manual lathe with dro. Take a test cut, measure the diameter and touch off but enter the radius. There is no need to go to 0.00 to touch off.

The gripe would seem to be the extra mouse clicks to set the touch off values.
I think the OP is looking for a solution that is more akin to Mach relating to setting these values, something that makes him "feel more at home".

then do the same thing again with the other axis

If you are using the AXIS screen, you select the axis you wish to set with the radio buttons, then select touch off.hi
