Looking for Recommendations of Controller/Driver for my APSX Spyder was created by Mugsmuggler
Hi
I've been struggling with my 4-axis router recently. I've burnt up 2 boards and the support APSX is spotty at best.
The components are solid but, the hardware seems to have reliability issues.
I'm ready to move on to a whole new controller/driver system and possibly upgrade to a 240-volt spindle.
Preferably something plug and play with parallel ports.
Any suggestions?

What boards were you burning up?
If you were simply burning up step-motor drivers, you could and probably should upgrade those to better or more appropriately sized ones without changing your whole control.
Or are you looking for recommendations for new motor drives to use with Linuxcnc?

The last thing that went out was a stepper driver. Previously, it blew the 5a fuse and then the spindle controls. I think I'm chasing a lemon somewhere in the power supply or main transformer but, can't be sure. The board and transformer seems to be proprietary to APSX so, I'd really like to move away from their motion control system. I'll be the first to admit I need to give them a little more time to make it right but, I'm not impressed so far. I think it could be a good machine if they can get in front of these gremlins.
So what I'm looking for is a complete motion control system that I could run from the computer that came with the machine. As the machine has 4 z steppers, 2 y steppers, and 2 x steppers is going to have to be pretty stout.
I'm also thinking about upgrading the spindle while I'm at it.
This may end up being redundant if things get sorted out but, I've been down for 3 weeks and counting. I'm thinking even as a back-up it, might be a good investment to get another motion control system.

Issue Resolved
They just needed more time to get me another board. I understand it may have been an issue with that particular batch. If I understood them correctly, there was a supplier quality issue that they have resolved. APSX also sent me some upgraded hardware with new firmware to detect spindle stall. I’ve been up and running for a couple weeks now.
Also after having some initial concerns about support, I have had good response via email.
I would still be interested in a 240 volt spindle upgrade. The machine itself is a beast and I believe it has so much more potential.
