UEFI unable to boot linux was created by johnmc1
Good Day All,
Trying to load debian wheezy, but windows 11 on the new HP laptop with UEFI  system boot loader, has no legacy bios.
Not interested in the microsoft  dual boot for the windose 11.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated.
Cheers john

Hmmm ... question:
Why Wheezy on a laptop?
There is no parallel port on that laptop so wheezy is useless, nevermind that it is way past it's end of life so no more updates.
Try the 2.8.2 from the downloads page, it should boot with UEFI and it is required if you intend to use Mesa ethernet boards as it uses the RT-Preempt kernel.
But before any of that, boot the laptop from the USB into a live session and test the latency with:
latency-histogram --nobase --sbinsize 1000 --show
If the intention is to use it as a sim, you can boot a live session and open a config from another USB or from the HDD/SSD, even without installing. You can even run machines from a live session, but i would not do that for daily use.

I would probably install Debian Bullseye using an ISO burnt using Rufus and install Linuxcnc from source. using these instructions
www.qtpyvcp.com/install/bullseye.html

Bullseye seems to have good support for UEFI in the Linux 5.10 kernel.
I don't think BUster on the 2.8 iso provide good UEFI support

Linuxcnc UEFI BOOT   Good day all. Thanks to Tommylight and Rodw for their input Tommylight said why wheezy ? I only wanted a laptop as a light computor when away from home.It was the cheapest laptop that was available ,only reason I suggested wheezy ,is because, it is used in my lathe and mill .Untill this time, I have had no trouble,getting legacy bios to work .And as you say the laptop is not suitable for linuxcnc work.I live 200 km from Melbourne and there are no cheap good laptops around home . As Rodw Suggested, I will try installing Debian Bullseye with Rufus that shouldkeep me out of mischief . Cheers johnp { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 115%; }

It has some UEFI support (I bought a UEFI PC to check, when I made the ISO file)

John, Just be aware that you will be unable to run Master branch on Mint 20.3 becasue the included version of Python 3 is < the requirement of 3.9 and higher. I used to use Mint but now always use Debian Bullseye or higher for this reason.

Debian 12 Bookworm (aka testing) has a packaged version of master/2.9 which can be installed by typing
sudo apt install  linuxcnc-uspace

This gets you to the 5.17 kernel well ahead of Mint's 5.4 so a wider range of hardware is supported.
