How reliable is LinuxCNC on RPI and Mesa Controller board for long hrs was created by vkhargwanshi
Hello All,
I am looking for an option of using Linux CNC on Raspberry Pi with Mesa Controller for a 3 axis router. Was just wondering if this combination can work for 11-12 hrs of continuous working every day. I read many people using RPI for hrs/days and its working fine.. Linux CNC is stable and Mesa controller also. So my personal thought is this combination should be able to work for hrs provided proper cooling system is added.
Any feedback from your experience would be helpful.
Thanks

It's an interesting question. I have left LinuxCNC Pi's running for days at a time, but not actually moving machinery. But actually that shouldn't make any difference to the work that the Pi is doing.
That said, I would probably choose a standard PC with PSU and fans if I wanted to be sure of uptime, unless there was a convincing reason to use a Pi.

One major reliability issue with RPI's has nothing to do with them, power supply!
They are very touchy/feely about power supplies, so get a good one. And a cooler/fan, while you're at it.

I have an Arduino that's been on for >10 years (other than power outages) as my lathe DRO.
Not the same Pi & Mesa components, but anecdotal evidence that a stable microcontroller stays stable absent some external issue.
As Tommy indicated, power supplies are the weak link. If this is a 'mission-critical' thing, you can get redundant power supplies with automatic switching and alarms.

Ive been running RPI4/mesa daily since they came out, not always on a machine, but usually with an identical desktop unit for configuring and testing. I have not observed erratic behavior, or questionable reliability. If you setup properly with stability in mind, then I havent observed an issue after daily use. temperature and cpu usage stay stable and consistent while running linuxcnc . RPI has shortcomings nothing major, but they are unrelated to reliability. Fan,4amp powersupply, no wifi or bluetooth and you should be solid.
