Yes, you're frustrated, and it's horrible. Linux is horrible for newcomers, myself included.
I'm not great with this but I'll try. What linux distribution do you have?

I would venture a guess that he is using the Wheezy ISO with LinuxCNC 2.7, from the pictures.

I think the first step is to get LCNC running, then worry about configuring it specifically for your toolchanger later.
Download the 2.8.2 ISO, burn the iso to a usb drive using rufus, and then install the whole thing.
You should wind up with Debian 10, plus linuxcnc installed.

And the -- signs are important.
And you need to spell the file name correctly.
Assuming that you have downloaded the toolchanger.comp file, and that you are in the same folder as that file, ie you can see it with the "ls" command.
Should do the trick.

Unless you are running a very old version of LinuxCNC then the command is "halcompile".Sudo comp install toolchenger.. does nothing

Thanks...
I have another problem I've measured the voltage on pin 2 on an onboard parallel port it read 3.5 volts is this enough to run stepper motors? Or is there a way to change to 5volts.?
Halcompile changes to what sort of file.?
Thanks in advance

3.3V should work with stepper drives, new-ish ones do work for sure.

Also 3.3V parallel port are generally 5V tolerant. meaning that you can pull them (weakly) up to 5V and then the pin pulls itself down in the low state.
But, basically, using a generic £20 break-out board will hide this from you, and provide 5V step pulses.

Most break-out boards operate by sinking current into the pin wen it is in a low state (P-Port pins can typically sink more current than they can source)I have another problem I've measured the voltage on pin 2 on an onboard parallel port it read 3.5 volts is this enough to run stepper motors?
