Can Mesa 7i77 deal with 20 bit incremental encoders? was created by vmihalca
Hi guys,
I since my 37 year old siemens power supply is starting to fail, I am considering replacing the servo drives/motors and the spindle drive.
The board I am using now is a 7i77, but the encoders have 1000ppr so 4000 pulses in quadrature.
But the new delta drives that I am considering, have 20bit encoders which means 1,048,576 ppr.
Any idea if Mesa 7i77 can deal with such a high number of pulses? The max speed of the motors will be 3000 rpm.
Thanks,
Vasi

You'll find info on maximum encoder count rate in the 7i77 manual.
Most servo drives have an "electronic gear" (or similarly named) setting that reduces the visible resolution of the encoder by dividing the raw encoder counts by an integer. Check your servo drive manual for details.

After a quick look in the Delta ASDA-A2 manual it seems the pulse output resolution is controlled by P1-46/GR3 "Pulse Number of Encoder Output". Its range is 20-320000 pulses/rev. Default 2500. (Their "electronic gear" registers seem to be used only for position control modes.)
