Does a Raspberry PI currently offer a viable host solution for LinuxCNC? was created by Simon55
Greetings to all.
I have two outdated home-grade mid-towers running outdated versions of linuxCNCs in two CNCs.
And I'm seeking for a fanless, space-saving device, such as a compact desktop or maybe a Raspberry Pi, that can operate those CNCs.
In terms of not having a fan, having a tiny footprint, and having a USB to Parallel interface available, the raspberry pi appears to be an intriguing choice.
I want to know if I can use a raspberry pi, and if so, what specifications, or if a compact desktop with business-class hardware is preferable.
I'm grateful.

USB to parallel does not work with LinuxCNC.
Having said that, there is a version on sale that uses an arduino nano to emulate parallel port, but at around 80 Euro it is way to expensive as that is nearly the same price as Mesa 7i92 that will do two parallel ports at much, much higher step rates and can be configured as you wish or need. Also uses Ethernet and works with RPI4.

The Raspberry Pi isn't a cheap choice at the moment, as they are in rather short supply and folk are profiteering.
I was sent a spam with this in it earlier today. It runs fanless and has a real parallel port. It would need a PSU and RAM (but a PicoPSU will do the job, running off of machine 12V)
