Hello, I have a  question regarding the use of the A axis as a spindle, namely the plan is that the A axis on the lathe can work as an A axis, but that in some part of the operation(end of operation cut piece with classic knife), it also works as an S (spindle) motor. On the lathe headstock is Ac servo 2.3kw, driver can work in two modes -step/dir or velocity (analog voltage 0-10v)i will use step/dir. Does anyone know how to make Hal so that linuxcnc understands the A command primarily, but also accepts the S command up to the full number of rpm and ignores the A axis? Thank yourelated to my post #251650

There have been a few threads about switching between spindle mode and axis mode. A comprehensive one (using MESA hardware) is here:

This is VERY interesting and can probably do everything you want: Sadly this is in German but you may still be able to follow using auto translate from youtube  -> www.talla83.de/linuxcncspindel.html

Zip files for the configuration are available here -> www.talla83.de/linuxcnc/config.htm
(20180103, 20180105, 20180107)

This is from 2018. Does anyone know if any of those features are somehow now included within newer version of linuxcnc, as a component or any other way?

..this is also excellent, there is a lot of information to understand, I followed tella83 but I didn't come across this. My lathe is still in the stage of making the mechanics and I think that with all this help it will work according to my needs. Many thanks

Btw i dont need spindle orient(or index angle 90-180,270 etc) maybe sometimes. My priority is A axis, the fourth axis (on the Y axis two machining motors will be mounted, one with a saw the other with a milling bit... I plan a series operation in small wooden pieces.. A axis operation where saw blade will mill, using gcode from DESK proto Cam, with constant rotation of the A axis with of course low rpm, when it finishes the whole procedure, the A axis will then be irrelevant, but in the following the control of the A axis should be taken over by the S command, to rotate the motor and the wooden piece up to 1000 rpm for example and that the fixed knife mounted on Xaxis will cut the piece, will cut it off. That's all. I will illustrate with photos when I finish the mechanics of all axes.

Done with output from Mesa 7i96s, to AASD servo driver settings, to change position/speed mode on driver input.

Nice, do you have to rehome when switching from spindle to axis mode?

interesting question, I don't need it at the moment, because the plan is to do only round things, with the A axis, a little saw motor on vertical axis(y)..small wooden bowl..than spindle command to cut the piece.but it's not out of the question to install some inductive sensor and some reference to the headstock...maybe someday it will be needed for some index operation;)

out of his, maybe you know, does this aciera have a ballscrew as a drive on axes? I think maybe it is suitable for retrofit?
