Cloning HD was created by Waldemar
Hello all,

So I've got my PC setup, LinuxCNC configured and working as I'd expect it to and what I'd like to do now is to clone my 128GB SSD onto a backup 128GB SSD that can sit in a drawer and come out in the event of a future disk failure, the idea being that I simply replace the dud drive with the backup and I'm up and running again.

What's the best way of going about this?  I'm thinking of getting hold of a 2 disk caddy, popping both disks in, hooking up to my Windows PC and then using something like this:

www.diskpart.com/clone/how-to-clone-a-ha...hard-drive-7201.html

There's a very good chance that there's a better and more efficient way that one of you guys could point me towards.

Many thanks.

Wal.

Cloning takes quite some time, and if the slave disk is smaller DD will have ti be forced to clone and might end up useless.
Still download the Clonezilla ISO, burn to USB, boot from it and clone, just make sure what drive is the master, once you press enter there is no going back. There is alaso the option of copying only used sectors that is much faster, but any error on the master will render the slave useless.
It is much faster to make a new install and just copy the config folder over.

And you can have both drives installed on the same PC and choose which one to boot from by going into BIOS, or by pressing F12 or F11 or F9 or ... depends on board.

I do it with dd. First take a look where your source and target is.
To clone
"dd if=/dev/source of=/dev/target bs=1M status=progress"
option bs=1M increase speed.
Mostly is not possible to boot this clone because UUID is not the same. To fix it. I boot with simple linuxcnc netinstall stick mount root partition and install grub again.

Thanks for your suggestions thus far.  Hey - I was just having a look for disk caddies and spotted this on Amazon:

amzn.to/3Shl1W2

Says it supports Mac OS and Linux and offers an offline clone feature.

EDIT:  I bought the caddy linked to above and it worked just fine.  Now have a back-up disk sat in the drawer.
