y-axis not counting but 7i77 sees the signal was created by Doug Crews
Hello everyone.I need some guidance on where to look next. The problem is my y-axis is not counting its only incrementing the last digit back and forth. The rest of the machine seems fine. I made a video of the halscope with the a&b channels of the both x-axis and y-axis in front of the axis GUI so you can see the position changing and not changing when I manually crank a handle, it’s too large to upload so I made a screen shot. X counts correctly but Y does not, the 7i77 seems to be receiving the signals from the encoders.
Maybe someone can spot something in the signal or suggest another track to put on the halsope to further troubleshoot. Thanks in advance for any help. Machine setup:Version 2.7.14Hardware; 5i25 7i77I’m running a dual loop setup where the motor encoders are closed in the drives handling the velocity tuning and 1micron linear scales are closed at the 7i77 handling the position tuning. It's been working really good for a couple of years now, it just suddenly started faulting out in the y-axis.

Scope shows none of the encoder pins are active, 75% should at least one or two of those be high, only 25% chances where both can be low.
If they both remain low while rotating, encoder is not wired correctly or is dead, so:
Check that 5V go to the encoder, measure from Mesa terminal and if there is a possibility near encoder.
Check the A and B phases for around 4V when stationary or 2 to 2.25V while rotating. Also can be measured at Mesa encoder terminals.
Make sure the jumpers on the Mesa are set correctly for single ended or diferential encoder, although this should show signals even when not set properly, just will not count correctly.
Check the 0V wire for continuity from Mesa to encoder.

Hi tommy, thanks for the quick response I was in the middle of a small run of parts and it really helps when you all are quick to join in. The problem fixed itself with a total power down and restart. This is the first instance of that kind of glitch.
I quite linuxcnc several times adjusting f-error but I did not do a total power off. However, before the power off did get y-axis to move by adjusting the f-error, but it was a slow moving run away. I put an oscilloscope on the terminals of the 7I77 and the signals looked normal at the voltages you posted.
You mentioned the lack of any signal on the x-axis. I should have posted another photo of the x-axis pulsing on the halscope. I could only move one axis at a time while holding the phone camera. Sorry for the confusion.
In all. I’ll take the win, but it's one of those wins that you don’t know how you won. Spooky.
Thanks again for all you do.

Do check and monitor the 5V encoder supply, might be marginally low causing the encoder to fail at boot.
