When you give up on Maso, LinuxCNC will still be here.

Choosing a RPI as an initial LinuxCNC host is not the easiest path

Raspbery is not good for begginer. Better is use Dell Optiplex with normal Debian.
Why is LinuxCNC so difficult?
Because it can do everything.
The ideal situation would be if you could find an LCNC Integrator who would help you and teach you how to use LCNC. Unfortunately, LCNC Integrator is not enough.

Powerhouse, you are on the right track. Mesa and RPI4 is a good combo, and believe it or not, it is one of the easier things to setup, with the user premade images . Mesa also has great support as well as the included configuration tool, pncconf.
A more productive approach is to ask a specific technical question.
Linuxcnc, and everything linux is so fucking hard all the time, not matter what. But so is everything else I dont understand. Difficulty is negated by reading, learning and sometimes asking for help.
The results are the top tier for its class of cnc controller. There isnt anything better for the price. If you do not need top tier, there are easier things than linuxcnc that can fill your needs. The extra reading required for linuxcnc is worth the time.
