Glas scale, Mesa card and general machine question

Hi Forum,

I have a few questions which all kind of are of the same topic. Not sure in which sub forum they fit best, that's why posted in general.

I am upgrading my 3 axis driven CNC milling machine. Running of my parallel port with open loop stepper motors.

Mechanically the machine is belt driven on X and Z. 2 motors on Y (currently without autosquaring) + 1 motor on x and 1 on z. I want to convert X and Y to ball screws. Staring with the x axis.

I was also thinking about getting glas scales with 5um resolution.

My questions regarding glas scales:
I wonder if for the Y axis, I should get 2 glas scales for each side of the portal one?
What kind of speed can I go with latency of 20000 ? My pc has 2 parallel ports.

If I would choose a mesa card, do I see it right, that I would need the 7i95 as this is the cheapest card which supports more than 1 encoder?

Looking forward to your comments.

With base thread of 20000 you get 50000 pulses per second, but i would never go over 25000 as any miss in counting can cause issues.
From that you can get the speed you can run the machine at, but i had no glass scales so no idea how and what and why. Pretty sure parallel port is to slow for any reasonably fast machine, but at low speed it should be usable.
As for Mesa 7i95T, if you can not find that, there are several options, like
7i92T and 7i85S, that gives 4 step/dir and 4 encoders/scales but no IO on terminals, you can use a simple BOB though if you already have it.
7i96S and 7i85 or 7i85S, 4 encoders, plenty of step/dir and IO

I guess with max 25000 steps with a 5um Glas scale I end up with around 60mm/min on parallel port. That‘s way to slow.

Where do you see that the 7I96S has 4 encoders? When I look in the manual it says only one encoder is supported for the spindle.

7i85 has 4 encoders, connects to 7i96S or to 7i92T, so 5 total.
