Parallel Port Cards (on the cheap!) was created by steveinjava
I am about to install LinuxCNC but no longer have a pc with a DP25 port. I understand most cards to add a DP25 are not suitable. So my question is, for a money-challenged starter like me, how can I check a card on Aliexpress (eg) will work? Many, many thanks for any help and apologies if this is addressed somewhere here.

NetMOS ans MOSChip chipsets worked for me always for PCI cards.
Avoid the cards with a very small chip.

Many thanks for your help. I can't (immediately) find a card that mentions either technology. The one I had my miserly eye on mentions "AX99100 Chip"
I googled it and its spec looks impressive, at least to me.
The actual card is at www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005945282926.html if I am allowed to link it.
Any advice gratefully received.

As soon as I sent the last message I spotted a card with Moschip
www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001572620629.html
I would still like to check I can't save the cost with the other one but I am guessing this is the way to go?

Last one should work.
No guaranties, though, there is no way of knowing without actually testing it.

I have asked the vendor about linux drivers. Assuming there is one I will give it a punt. Thanks again Tommy

If it’s a genuine moschip it’s supported by the Linux kernel. Third party drivers are rarely required for most hardware. It does happen but not that often. Usually exotic hardware and some network items.

The vendor got back to me and (translating) said there is no linux driver for this series. I take that means he wont supply one. Is there one available somewhere I can (probably) use? Thanks in advance...

Like I said if it's a genuine chip no "linux driver" will be required. There will be a driver included with the Linux source. So, unlike windows, there will be no need to install a driver. The only way to know for sure is to have the physical card and install it.
Some times, especially from the "cheaper sources" it is a bit "suck it & see" situation.
The thing is with some the drivers supplied by the seller\vendor\whoever packs the goods, the drivers are for long forgotten superseded kernels, sometimes less useful than a chocolate teacup.
But luckily a good percentage of cards are ok, the only issue as reported by others in the know, is that EPP is not properly supported, which is not an issue if you are using software stepping. Only if you are using an external motion card that communicates via EPP.

Because it has a serial port and a parallel port on the same card, I would keep looking. Some cards emulate parallel over serial which is not suitable for real time stepping.
