Backing up your work was created by RyanB
I've installed Linux CNC, got things up and running, installed some other linux programs to make life a little easier, but I am completely aware that a mistake would take me back to square 1.

Since I am fairly new to linux in general, I'd like to save the entire system on a second drive, having 3-5 saves back, so if I do screw something up I can just go back to when I did have it working. How would I go about this?

You just need to save the contents of the linuxcnc folder under your home directory.
If you do have a failure, reinstall linuxcnc from the ISO downloads and reinstate your linuxcnc folder.
I just save a snapshot to google drive from time to time

linuxcnc folder will not save linux settings, it is better to make a copy of the disk
clonezilla.org/downloads.php
