Minipc standalone ethercat vs Minipc and mesa card ? was created by Markgonz
Hello, I have been doing some research and I want to understand better the difference on these systems, for instance these setups in the videos use Raspberry pi 4 and Ethercat so he can directly talk to the servos and no mesa card is needed, I understand Ethercat makes wiring much more simple and the cabinet has less parts, also on some servos is possible to do homing directly, some cons seem that is harder to implement because there is less info out there and hardware is possibly more expensive usually, but my question is to know if it is as powerful as a mesa card setup on the max step rate side of things? any other toughts I may be missing?
Thanks!

I have never used EtherCAT as in doing a full setup, although i have fixed industrial machines using it i never had to mess with the EtherCAT part, so no idea.
I have used and use a lot of Mesa boards, they are worth every cent/penny/dime as they are extremely reliable and come with the best support on planet earth in the shape of PCW (an active member here), so i will not be switching to EtherCAT ever, especially since i learned it lacks some important stuff for me.
BTW, whatever the price for Mesa is, i have to pay at least double to get them here (black hole named Kosovo), still, i pay it gladly.
Reminds me, have to order some THCAD, installed the last one today.

Regarding max step rate: that potential bottleneck is eliminated with Ethercat, there are no pulse/direction signals. Instead a new target position is give over EtherCAT to the driver.
I think the two technologies complement each other. If you have/want to use traditional drives with pulse/direction or analog voltage control you go with Mesa. If you want to invest in a field bus system with drives and other units, you go with EtherCAT.
