Small touchscreen display 7-10' was created by slowpoke
I'm looking for a suitable small 7-10" touchscreen display for use with LinuxCNC (lor a lathe). I plan to uses a RaspberryPI 4 that has a HDMI interface. The display will be positioned so that my eyes will be quite close ~12" from the display.

This one is cheap enough not sure if 1024x600 is compatible with axis?

or this one; 1920x1200

I have read there are some compatibility issues with some displays, so if anyone can recommend a display that is known to work well, please share the details.

Thanks

I'm not sure about axis, but I think it's compatible with most resolutions, but if you're able to find a 1920x1080 display you'll have more choice of user interfaces. For a smoother experience a Raspberry Pi 5 is a better choice.

Normal Axis without any VCP panels should be ok on 1024x768 screens, so probably will be clipped on 1024x600, although there are modified Axis GUI to fit smaller screens, no idea if they are included with LinuxCNC.
The 1920x1200 at 10" will be very small letters and XFCE (the desktop in official Debian) does not support fractional scaling, but Axis can be set to use bigger letters and it expands accordingly so it might be OK.
Personally i would go for higher resolution always, most stuff can be managed on it, it will be pain and suffering on low resolution as even some windows might not fit.

Thinking about it, i recal vaguely that 800x600 gui is included in 2.10 so chances are it is in 2.9.3 also.
Still, to small, i am used to at least full HD on 24" and bigger screens.

Well after playing with a 10" display, it's okayish but not usable from a touchscreen perspective. I also played with touchy a bit, but prefer the axis GUI.

So moved things around a bit to make some space and will use a larger probably 14-16" touchscreen. I ordered a 14" Amazon BlackFriday special to try out and size is about right, unfortunately this particular display requires a full featured USB-C port to get the "touches" back and does not seem to be able to get them back with a regular type A USB interface. So the search continues.....

I do have another display related question...
Somehow I setup the axis interface on my Milling machine so that the axis GUI can occupy/share the title bar space at the top. I don't know how to do this on the new "lathe" axis GUI.  This matters because when I set the resolution to 1024x768 the bottom sliver of the axis GUI (where the status and error messages get displayed) is off screen at the bottom.

So how do I get axis to share that top title bar space?

Right click on the bar, choose preferences, then check "auto hide". Works on any task bar.
Also, USB C should work with a USB C to A adapter, but in your case only with USB A 3.n version, not with USB 2 versions.
USB 1, 1.1, 2 use 4 pins, USB 3 uses 9 pins, Type C uses 18 pins, but some are for monitor signals .... so is the USB C used for monitor and touch? If yes, then no adapter works. Cr@p, only recalled this while typing.

The instruction pamphlet goes on an on about the virtues of using a full featured USB-C port because no HDMI connection is required, video, touch sound all over that single connection, however Pi does not have USB-C.

The instructions then go on to state if you connect the ports in a particular order that you can get the touch working in tandem with the HDMI port but I have tried all combinations and perhaps this might work on a Windows machine (I doubt it), but looks like I need to find another touchscreen, one that does not rely on a USB-C port for the touch signals.
Thanks

Out of curiosity, how much is a RPI and a good touchscreen these days?
Wondering as i got a Lenovo X1 Carbon Yoga for 120 and a Lenovo Yoga Y370 for 220, bot work for LinuxCNC with Mesa, both have 120Hz touchscreens, very high quality ones, very good keyboards, and both do over 4-6 hours on batteries.

RaspberryPi was $50 locally, the touchscreens $80-100ish Canadian pesos from Amazon. So a shade > US$100 for both. I can't vouch for the "good" WRT reliability the resolution/sharpness is decent not ipad quality but quite acceptable for a CNC machine.

hmmm, thanks for the tip. That might be a good option.

I seem to recall comments about not using laptops because of the power saving features. Did you have to disable those in BIOS or elsewhere?
