BRIDGEPORT R2E3 MILL REDO QUESTIONS was created by Nolan2924
I have a Bridgeport R2E3 mill that I gutted and followed the instructions from a Fellow on line RustyBrainDump.com did everything step by step but having problems. He is not available to answerquestions anymore. Started this process in 2022 and stopped. My wife has medical issues now. So home bound now trying to return with this project. Have analog Encoders that are on 80vdc brush motorold school machine. have 3 Gecko 320X drivers ST-3V breakout board.  Most folks say that I Should of used7i77/7i77e and Daughterboard? Using Linux CNC, 150 chopper wheel count Analog encoder. 5vdc input 50-200ma. Do anyone know that converted a CNC R2E3, 4000lbs machine. I would hate to stop now.Tony K Omaha NE

Those "most folks" are very wrong, as Gecko uses step/dir signaling/control while Mesa 7i77 has purely analog outputs.
-The correct board for Geckos without feedback to LinuxCNC would be 7i96S, but still, if you later want to add feedback to LinuxCNC you can get a Mesa 7i85 that connects to 7i96S and has 4 encoder inputs.
-The correct Mesa board for Geckos with encoders ONLY if you want to close the loop in LinuxCNC, would be 7i95 as it does step/dir with encoder feedback.

Friendly warning: You really need to know about wiring and electronics to make sure everything is on the same potential if you want to use the same encoders for feedback to Geckos and Mesa/LinuxCNC. This will not be an issue if you have encoders wired to Gecko and glass scales wired to Mesa/LinuxCNC.

Here is a retrofit using Mesa 7i95 and the same encoders used for feedback to Geckos and Mesa/LinuxCNC:
