the minus sign pulses on and off when turning the leadscrew and I can get a reading on the hal meter when as the leadscrew turns.
The scale is anilam from the GXM control.
I have set the jumpers next to the encoders to single ended input ( left )
The scales have +5v, ground and three signals.
Will try all wiring combinations for signals first.

Actually its probably faster to test the signals with a voltmeter
or just a LED and a resistor
or just a LED and a resistor

Thank you again for the replies and bearing with me.
Wiring from encoder signal swapped and now counting.
Would it best to learn to calibrate the servos manually and not use pncconf?

pncconf has more tuning amenities but you can use the calibrate function in Axis
First thing is to get the encoders reading the right direction and with the correct scale
next step is getting the drive enables under linuxcnc control for safety
then getting the feedback direction correct
and last but not least, tuning the drives...

I have the plug n go 5i25+7i77 installed in the computer. trying to get pnc to see my 5i25. tried the files from cmorley's posts. Still doesn't see the 5i25 and only 3 lights on the 7i77......assuming the cards are set right because its plug n go. More worried about getting a config file going first. Thanks.

What exact error do you have?
Do you have the latest pncconf? it should have an option for selecting its internal 5i25 data
so you dont need to install the XML files
