On the theory that some initial motion with perhaps a maximum velocity limit
on 256 ustep capable drives is better than no initial motion, I would probably
use no step times less than 3 usec (I know the G540 is marginal at 2 usec with 3.3V ports)

There also is no cost associated with long setup/hold times so a 10 usec minimum limit is probably better for these

G540 has no microstepping ( it did not when i used them ), it just has a divider by 10, so basically for every 10 steps you send to it, it moves just 1 step. For 9 steps it does nothing ! Same was with G320 servo drives, had to open them and remove the divider.
Noticed that several years ago when i made direct belt driven cnc for engraving, using 20 teeth 2 mm belt, it was very noticeable and utterly useless. But on a big cnc router ( over 1 ton weight ) with big reductions it was very usable and still is in use every day. Quality is very good, but i stopped using them since i found LAM Technology.
