Mesa 7i76E first try was created by Jocman
Hi all.
Finally today i finished the bench wiring, and tried to make a first attempt with pncconf.
The card is connected with the pc via ethernet and working.
I'm following the guide i found on linxcnc site.
I see that the screens i see don't match the screenshots on the guide (i'm using the current version of linuxcnc).
Btw,i went on,by naming my machine and choosing axis and units.
From the dropdown list,i choosed the 7i76e (as it is present in the list),then set the stepgen (0=X,1=Y,2=Z) (but the button Start Test Panel doesn't do anything),then went to the X motor panel.
Right now,i've only 1 motor on my bench, wired to bank 0 for the stepgen (X).
But when i try to run the Test Tuning Axis, after enabling and pushing Start, nothing happens. The motor don't rotate.
I double checked the wiring and i realized I inverted pulse with dir and viceversa; after fixing the wrong wiring, tested again, but nothing again.
The motor is working (the rotor mast is blocked and it goes warm) but no sign of life.....
Only En+ and En- aren't wired,but i think they're not mandatory.
Any suggestion?
Thanks
Andrea

The most common reason for lack of motion is wiring or too short step pulse lengths

Double checked again and the wirings are correct.
My stupid question: where to set the step pulse lenght?

It would be the Step-On time on the X Motor, Y Motor etc pages

Well, just the places where i cheked....
I put in several values, even following your suggestion given in another post as starting point when the values are unknown:

5000 steplength
5000 stepspace
20000 dirsetup
20000 dirhold

Unfortunately it wouldn't accept more than 5000 each fields, but even inserting 5000 in each field, then trying lowering the values, the motor still don't move....

Did you try running the pncconf created configuration?

Honestly,as nothing moved i quit pncconfig without going on with the other axis....
Well, tomorrow when i back from work (in a while i'll go to sleep) i'll try to complete the wizard procedure and see what happen....

Ok I did the full pncconf procedure and started Linuxcnc. But I got an error message (see attacheg log.txt).
As I understand, I've an issue with Preempt-RT kernel (so as I found on other post in the forum).
If I'm right, I've installed Linuxcnc Debian Wheezy, so I tried to follow the steps found on Linuxcnc website to install Preempt-RT kernel.
But this time the system tells me there's nothing to update.

Well, don't know what to do now....

You need the Stretch version of LinuxCNC for Mesa ethernet boards.
Get it in the downloads section of the main Linuxcnc page.

Did you select "Custom" for the stepper? I'm pretty sure it won't allow value changes, or at least only a very limited range, unless custom is selected.
