INI file did the trick. At least just 1 spot to change.
I think when I did the discover I entered "7i76e-16", let me try it again.

Ah,
Is this a result of flashing 7i76e_7i76x1pD.bit?

greg@cutty:~/linuxcnc/configs/shapeoko$ mesaflash --device 7I76E-16 --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid
ETH device 7I76E-16 at ip=10.10.10.10
7I76E-16
Configuration Name: HOSTMOT2
General configuration information:
BoardName : MESA7I76
pncconf probably picked the board name up from there?

No, on Ethernet cards the name is not the FPGA/HM2 name (MESA7I76)
Did you try "7I76E" with the discovery option? it works for me

Running 2.8.2 iso
If I enter "7i76e" when asked, it will say "Boardname: discovered:7i76". I then have to enter the number of connectors, number of pins and interface type.

If it's working in 2.9, any point in opening an issue for 2.8.2 on GitHub?

Yes, because updating to 2.9 is a major step because of all the Python2-3 changes
