yes I could see what your saying
so I need to add some buttons fwd and rev and set rpm could pre-select the spindle speed if the spindle in not running or set the spindle speed if it is running... better idea?

Yea, the rpm button is the only one you need to add to the spindle area. You might consider having the button label also show the current setting for S... then at a quick glance just before you press the Fwd or Rev button you can verify the speed the spindle will run at. For VFD driven spindles you don't want to run them too slow for long and that is one of the features I dislike about Axis.
RPM
1000
Now I'm going to have to get a touch screen for the CHNC!

Do you generally start at the same RPM range all the time or its always very different?
The +- keys are a quick way to adjust the RPM as long as its starts close to the Range you want.
I made some changes that I may push - not exactly as we described.
For whatever reason I prefer to select the direction without starting the spindle -don't ask me why...
hmm maybe i should try your way on the custom gcreen ... good practice

Do you think user selectable spindle increase increments would be a good idea?
selectable in the preference page?

When I manually start the spindle on the mill it is always at the same RPM to use the edge finder... when I make a probe that might change.
If the Spindle button is a toggle for off and on and Fwd and Rev just select direction that works for me too.

That and a minimum spindle speed. Most spindles have a minimum speed that they can be run at.

Chris ,
yes I think setting a minimum spindle speed and then an increment for speed steps in preferences is fine

The mode button would be a lot more intutitive if it said MDI Mode, Auto Mode etc instead of Mode 0.
I'm actually running the 3-d chips file now on the mill...
