Home convention for 6040 cnc router is upper left corner?

X 0 to +350mm
Y 0 to +550mm or -550mm
Z 0 to -60mm or +60mm
?

Home positions for the tool (not the table) for mill like machines is usually Z0 all the way up, X0 all the way to the left, Y0 all the way back as viewed from the front.

And soft limits for Y and Z axes are from 0 to +N or -N ?
Also how to change orientation to visual preview of axis gui to suit actual machine ?
( how to rotate visual preview screen?)

Say you have 20 units of travel on each axis then usually:
X min limit 0 max 20
Y min limit -20 max 0
Z min limit -20 max 0.

See some info on touching off here:

Iam using stepconf wizard and if i give min -20 to max 0 for Y and Z
the tool point moves outside the preview frame also when home to upper left corner
the actual path is outside the frame of machine (can be crash).
If i tick invert for step-dir signals this will solve the prob?

Sounds like your confusing home and soft limits with touch off to material. Home positions and max/min limits define the envelope the machine can move. LinuxCNC will stay within that envelope.

Did you touch off the tool to the work as shown in my tutorial?

I gave in stepconf wizard for
Y min -550 max 0 and home -550
Z min -50 max 0 and home -50
and now works fine but it is difficult to work with negative numbers.
For example to go home now must give g53 x0 y-550 z-50
with previous setting i went to home with g53 x0y0z0

Why did you use minus numbers for home?

I gave in stepconf wizard for
X min 0 max 300 and home 0
Y min -550 max 0 and home 0 also inverted dir pin
Z min -50 max 0 and home 0 also inverted dir pin
and now works fine.
The key was to invert the dir pin for Y and Z axis otherwise does not work correctly
(My wiring is not inverted [A+ A- B+ B-] for Y and Z axis is straight like X axis)
