Using Hal Meter (I think it's called) I do see the pins changing. The handheld pendant works. I don't know what I was missing when I wrote that previous post. I don't need to jumper COM and NC on the C22 board. Also the handheld doesn't care if its estop button is in or out. When I choose X, I get X motion. Same for Y and Z. The distance-per-click is backwards (it goes the furthest on the X1 setting and produces the smallest increment on the X100 setting) but I'm not concerned about that. I do have to hold in the button on the side. Looks like it doesn't do anything without the button held in.
Thanks for the encouragement and direction. I guess the net changes from the sample file for installation on a computer with a Motenc Lite interface card and an unused parallel port are:
1) add:
loadrt hal_parport cfg="0x378 in"
addf parport.0.read servo-thread 1
(I omitted the parport.0.write suggested above because I didn't see a need for it)
2) substitute servo-thread in place of base-thread
3) change all the parport.1's to parport.0's

That's probably a deliberate safety feature.
Switching the X1 / X100 should be easy. Probably just a case of switching the parameters of some setp commands on a mux component.
