proximity switch encoder help

I had a small 30t gear laying around. I bored it out and pressed it on the shaft.

I setp hm2_7i76e.0.encoder.00.counter-mode 1. not sure what that does but it appears to use only one channel of the encoder, so I'm only using 1 proximity switch. I set the encoder scale to 30 until I grab my optical tach from work I don't know if speed is accurate but it's smooth on the pyvcp widget. Counts look good too from HAL show. So I suppose that if I want higher res I'll have to use a higher tooth gear.

any thoughts?
