You can measure the torque using the pulley, a piece of string and a spring balance.

What is the rated torque? You can apply 5Nm with a small screwdriver (10Nm with a big screwdriver), and a NEMA 17 motor will typically make 0.5Nm.

So is it 10% of the torque you can apply with a screwdriver? If it is, then it is working OK.

A colleague of mine tried this engine with another drive and it works, has a good torque and an acceptable overheating.
so maybe the problem is that they are badly set parameters or that the drive is not suitable for this stepper but it seems strange to me.

which parameters could influence this actions?

There is only one setting. That's the current.
If it is getting hot then the current is high

I guess that the driver could be using such a low PWM rate that the torque dips low enough to slip, but that would be a broken drive,

Have you ever run the stepper with much to high current?
It is possible to demagnetize a motor that way and then you endup with no force!
